A Season of Growth
You may recall from the new moon what an intense and sometimes gory process bucks go through in growing and shedding their antlers each year. In some species, antlers can grow up to three centimeters or an inch and a half a day. That’s the equivalent of us growing a third arm every summer. Can you even imagine. And then of course it would just drop off when we were done with it.
We can take a cue from nature’s cycles of life, death, and life. Grow your heart out when it’s the season for that. Let dead weight fall away when you’re done with it. If it’s not a season of growth, there’s no pressure to grow. Do we chastise flowers for waiting until spring to bloom, or chickens for not laying eggs in the cold months? Of course not.
If summer is a season that gives you energy and you’re currently buzzing with creativity and delight. Embrace it! If you’re like me and the humidity saps your energy and makes you want to camp out in one of those ice bars, try one of two things: do the meditation practice below now and see if anything surprising comes up. And/or you can always circle back to this practice in another season when you feel more of a sense of expansion.
Our lives - the spiritual, physical, emotional, and social aspects of them - are cyclical. And so like the mighty buck, we can grow with abandon for a time. And then we must embrace rest in order to recuperate. Listen to the practice below and notice where you’re feeling a sense of expansion - or not - in this season.

How does it feel to engage with your body in this type of exercise?
Do you have a sense of what’s growing in and through you in this season?
As the world around us is hurting, what creative energy do you have to offer your community to put more care and love into the world?
Who is someone in your life that helps you nurture your creative spark?
