Taking a Lesson from Nature

July’s Full Buck Moon, coming up on July 10, is named for the epic summer growth of antlers on deer. This growth is energetically very costly. Some species grow their antlers at a rate of up to three centimeters a day. It’s the equivalent of if we humans grew a third arm every summer.

In order to offset some of that energetic cost, deer go through two phases of discarding tissue that has served its purpose. First, new antler growth is covered in “velvet” - soft, furry skin with blood vessels that feed, support, and protect the fresh antlers. Once the growth process is complete, that protective skin is no longer needed. It begins to slough off, and the deer may rub it off against branches and other hard surfaces to finish the job. (Only click this link if you want to see some gore!)

Now they’re left with bare antlers that they can use to impress the ladies with their virility (eyebrows, eyebrows) and to battle their fellow gentlemen callers for breeding rights. But once that process is complete, it does not serve the deer to maintain their antlers, so they drop them. The connective tissue lets go, and the antlers fall off with a shake of their head.

What do you need to release?

You also have incredible energetic and creative output. Whether that’s something that feels like an obligation or something that absolutely lights you up, you are creating all the time. And as we create, we can direct our energy with intention. We can identify and set down what we no longer need in order to free ourselves up for what we really need or want to give our attention to in this season.

Take a moment to listen to this guided meditation and be curious about what you notice may be ready to fall away to make room for whatever is next.

Reflecting

  • Is there anything you need to shed and let go of in order to make room for this season’s new growth?

  • Is there anything you’d like to do or say to bless and grieve what you’re letting go?

  • Think of the communities you’re a part of. Is there anything they need to collectively let go of? And could you be a help in doing that?

  • Who in your life can offer you support in letting go and making room for new growth?

  • And is there someone in your life you can support in their process of letting go?

Closing

As the Buck moon waxes and grows each night over the next two weeks, let it remind you to make new space for the new growth that is uniquely you and yours.
