Feed Your Soul

July’s full moon is often called the Buck Moon. It’s named for the time of year when bucks’ annual antler growth is filling out. Nearly all species of deer lose and re-grow their antlers annually. An individual’s set of antlers (their rack, if you will!) gets bigger and more complex each year until they reach their peak size at their most virile time of life.

They can grow up to three centimeters or an inch and a half per day. This is a huge energetic cost to the deer. It’s the equivalent of if we each grew a third arm every year. It’s a process that’s so energetically expensive that when they’re done with their antlers, they literally just detach from their head and fall away.

So the theme that I invite us to work with this evening is nourishing whatever it is that we’re growing in this season. That could be creative pursuits, healing or strengthening your body, or nurturing relationships. And we’re going to access nourishment by connecting with the earth.

Most of us are obligated to spend a lot of time inside, on screens because of our various commitments, often work related—even when our work is creative. (I’m currently typing this on a computer so I can share it with you!) Being connected via technology is a great gift, and can be depleting in some ways.

This is a practice you can do anywhere that you feel comfortable pausing and perhaps even closing your eyes. It would be wonderful to do this IRL and lay on the ground in the forest. But with a sense of imagination and a bit of magic, we can take a little soul break, even when we’re stuck inside.

So wherever you are today, let’s allow the full moon to invite us to reconnect with the natural world. To remember where we come from and what we’re ultimately nourished by.

Allow the earth to fuel your creativity

Get into a comfortable position, sitting or laying down, and listen to this guided meditation. In it, you’ll wander in an old growth forest, be inspired by what you find there, and allow your connection to the earth to nourish your creative growth.

Deepen Your Connections

Remember that ecosystems are symbiotic. Each member has a role to play in moving nutrients, offering something of themselves to their neighbors, collaborators, and co-creators.

What gifts do you bring to your ecosystems? This could be literal, as you interact with the natural environment. And it could be figurative, bringing goodness and life into the human communities you’re a part of. Trust that you are an essential part of the systems you live in. Challenge yourself to acknowledge your essential role.

Consider:

  • What ecosystems are you a part of? Consider your geographic and ecological environment, as well as the human communities and systems that you’re a part of.

  • What creative energy do you feel called to put out into the world?

    • Author and theologian Frederick Buechner wrote, “Your vocation in life is where your greatest joy meets the world’s greatest need.” Do you trust that what brings you joy is needed in the world?

  • Who is someone in your life that helps you nurture your creativity?

  • Who is someone you want to support in nurturing their creativity?
