Embrace life’s rhythms

On April 1, I was sicker than sick, and so I had to cancel our gathering in Baltimore for the Full Pink Moon. The good news is, we have an extra moon this year, the Blue Moon in May. And so we’re revisiting the following activity. Whether you can join us in person, do this on your own, or gather a few friends wherever you are, I invite you to reflect and craft and hope and dream.

Reflection

Grab a journal, turn on some music, and imagine your ideal spring or summer day. Jot down whatever comes to you. Don’t worry about being practical, just let yourself dream and see where your imagination takes you for 10-20 minutes. Or if you don’t feel like writing, lay back on the grass, in a patch of sun, or in a hammock and let your imagination wander.

Imagine your ideal spring day:

  • How do you feel when you wake up?

  • Where do you want to spend time outside?

  • Who do you want to spend time with?

  • What foods do you eat?

  • What do you want to create?

  • Who do you want to offer support to?

    • Does a friend, family member, or neighbor need a hand?

    • Is there an issue you want to engage?

    • Is there an organization or cause you want to donate your time or energy to?

  • As you wind down for the evening, how do you want to feel?

Craft time

Now that you’ve gotten the juices flowing, find a plant pot—one you have, something from the thrift store, or a new one—and decorate it. Paint, draw, decoupage it—whatever makes you happy and brings a bit of joy to your day.

As you craft, mull over your journaling exercise. As you think about where you want to put your time and energy this spring, translate those desires into statements about what you hope for or what you’re dreaming about. Write those hopes and dreams down on seed paper. And plant your hopes and dreams in your decorated pot.

Don’t have seed paper? That’s OK! Plant regular seeds in the spirit of your hopes for the season.

Over the coming weeks of spring, nurture and grow your little plants. And as you do, be mindful of what you hoped for this spring and check in on how you’re spending your time and energy. Can you make small or big shifts toward what would make this season meaningful for you and your community?

Practice with others

Recruit one or more friends to do this practice with you. And when you write your hopes and dreams on seed paper, tear them up and mix them together, so you’re each planting and nurturing some of your own and some of each others’ hopes. As your seeds grow and bloom, check back in with each other. How are you spending your energy and resources this spring? Are you connecting with the people and issues you wanted to? How can I help?
