Nature’s little builders

Watch, learn, and be delighted.

Beavers are wonderful creatures. They have a huge impact on shaping their environment and ecosystem by constructing their homes. They benefit from the ponds they make, but so do small fish that need a safe place to grow, and the still water attracts the bugs that those fish eat.

My favorite beaver fact is that the sound of running water prompts them to make repairs on their home. It’s the cutest thing ever. They’re very industrious little fellows.

So as the moon is dark, let’s reflect with a tarot practice to help us notice, nurture, and celebrate our inner builder and the gifts we bring to our lives and the lives of the people around us.

What are you building?

This beginner-friendly tarot practice can help you notice, nurture, and celebrate what you’re building and the positive impact you’re having on the systems you’re a part of.

You can do this practice with any tarot or oracle deck of your choosing. If you don’t have a deck of your own, the labyrinthos app has a free version that allows you to pull cards and it includes resources for interpretation.

Shuffle your deck as you ask yourself:

What have I built with my hands, my heart, and my community?

Whenever you feel like you’ve shuffled enough, cut the deck once or twice. And then pull three cards off the top:

  • The first card represents what you’ve built with your hands (materially, literally, physically)

  • The second card represents what you’ve built with your heart (spiritually, emotionally)

  • And the third card represents what you’ve built with your community (relationally, socially)

If you’d like to add a little more to your reading, draw a fourth card to remind you what gift you were created to share with the world, in this time, and in this place.

Here are some tips for interpreting the cards:

  • First, just look at the spread and see what jumps out at you.

    • Do any of the images evoke strong emotions?

    • Do you notice any patterns or colors that speak to you or spark curiosity?

  • Once you’ve done your own gut check, you can explore other resources:

    • Most decks come with a booklet with short-and-sweet interpretations for each card

    • Contemporary Tarot is a YouTube channel with short, 3-5 minute videos on each card

    • Tarot for the Wild Soul has courses, a podcast, and other resources for interpretation

    • Little Red Tarot is another great online resource!

Reflect

  • Beavers are prompted to start working when they hear running water. What is the thing that brings you back to your purpose? And who in your life supports you in that?

  • How are your gifts serving your community? Or how would you like to be offering your gifts to your community?

  • Who are your co-builders? How do you want to acknowledge and thank them?

  • What is something you’re proud to have built? How would you like to celebrate that?
